PRONUNCIATION TRAINING
If you are a non-native speaker of English, you may find that your accent is holding you back during the job application process.
You are unlikely to be told this by your interviewer and the feedback that you receive will often be that there was another "more suitable" candidate, or something similarly vague. If you often get interviews on the basis of your resume, but bomb out at the interview stage the reason may be that the interviewer had difficulty understanding your accent.
If you suspect that this is happening to you, you should consider undertaking accent reduction or pronunciation training.
Any training that you undertake should be developed by a qualified speech therapist/pathologist. The training will often be self-paced (online) and should be tailored to your original language and any particular issues you have. For a relatively small investment, you may find that you can improve your accent and improve your job chances in only a few weeks or months.
Two companies that we recommend are Speak More Clearly and Star Pronunication. Both have special offers available to CTEAA members.
